Description

Accepting Late Enrollment! Everyone loves a good story, and the best stories for kids are almost always illustrated. Illustration is an art practice that is unique from graphic design or fine art in that an “illustration” is created for a specific purpose: to narrate, to educate, to decorate, or to persuade. “Beginner Illustration” with Mariah is a foundational 7-week drawing class that will introduce your young artist to the world of visual storytelling through illustration. All levels welcome- no prior drawing experience necessary! We will build confidence in drawing skills starting with tracing, then still life observation and finally tap into our imaginations with character design. Students will be introduced to classical realism drawing skills using charcoal, graphite, and colored pencil to render the illusion of 3- dimensional form on paper, using grids to create consistent lighting and perspective. Students will also be encouraged to bend reality as we explore age-appropriate comic book and graphic novel drawing styles with a focus on human proportion for character design. Students will choose three elements to create an illustrated short story. Each student will illustrate one animal, a specific habitat (landscape), and a minimum of one main character to create their narrative. We will adopt one or more “storytelling tactics” as taught by Steve Rawling (♥ Pip Decks) to give structure to our stories. In the last class, students will design and present their illustrated short story as a staple-bound booklet of their own making in a group storytelling presentation (parents and siblings welcome). Teacher Bio: Mariah P Sotelino is a graduate of a Masters in Illustration from Maryland Institute College of Art a member of the Society of Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators. Mariah is a naturalist, an educator, and an environmentalist. Many moons ago, Mariah graduated from Swarthmore College in Biological Anthropology and has a penchant for biological illustration and obsession with botanical illustration. Mariah’s goal as an art teacher is to motivate young artists to find their own “voice”. With a nurturing personality and a huge smile, Mariah will encourage your young artist to gather specific, repeatable tools for their own artistic toolbox to express themselves. Supplies included in tuition fee. Class cancellation due to inclement weather, teacher illness, or school closure will be rescheduled for Oct 30.
