Hand Lettering with Mariah

Do you love to doodle? Are you constantly filling the sides of note paper with spirals and hatchings? Are you obsessed with fonts? Then this class is for you! Come learn the basics of Hand Lettering, the ancient art of creating beautiful messages drafted by hand. This all-levels drawing class will teach the power of a planned, purposeful and geometric stroke. Each day we will learn the basics of a new font style: calligraphy, block lettering, serif vs. sans-serif, gothic, and vintage fonts. We will explore ink, carbon-dust, and acrylics with various brush and writing utensils including sticks, q-tips, quills, and even our fingers to hone the control of the eye-hand coordination required to create crisp, gorgeous lettering. We will have fun playing with “flourishes” the swirls, lines, and swishes that decorate and embellish the letters. Students by the end of the week will create a collection of 3-5 original hand letter designs. Optional project: print card collection through Moo.com. Teacher Bio: Mariah P Sotelino is a naturalist, an educator, and an environmentalist. Mariah studied Conservation Biology at Swarthmore College and is obsessed with the intersection of science and art. Mariah has a Masters in Illustration from Maryland Institute College of Art. Mariah is a member of The Society of Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators, The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, and The Society of Illustrators. Mariah’s goal as an art teacher is to motivate artists to find their own “voice”.
