Description
This atelier-style drawing course mirrors the foundational, level 1 curriculum of classical atelier programs such as Studio Incamminati, where instructor Michela Mansuino studied and currently teaches. The course meets 5 times during the fall, and is followed in the afternoon by an optional session of Open Studio, an uninstructed model session where students can practice the techniques learned in class (you can register here for Open Studio sessions). Artists will follow a very structured program of learning, beginning by studying gesture in the human figure through short poses. Working in loose, broad strokes, participants will learn how to consistently state the full figure with dynamic movement as the founding concept of a drawing. The development of mass drawing and gestural drawing will continue into intermediate poses as students are shown the principles for building on gesture and constructing figurative structure in the later stages. Recommended reading: Peck, Steven “Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist” Drawing is done in charcoal, which is the core material used in the first year of all classical atelier programs. This medium lends itself to painterly mass drawing and is easily and quickly corrected, making it a perfect channel to learn the fundamentals. This class is foundational for beginning students, but it is also highly valuable to intermediate artists who want to improve their figure work. Master artists often say that “you can’t paint yourself out of a drawing problem”; this class provides an excellent review and an opportunity to correct old habits that do not serve you. For artists who are interested in painting more expressive figures, a solid foundation in figure drawing can ease your path. Model fees are split by all the students and paid directly to the instructor on the first day of class. Supplies: Canson IMoonstonei Paper (25×19 inches, heavy weight), Vine and Willow Charcoal, Kneadable Erasor, Blending Stumps, Viva Paper Towels
