Winter: Still Life Plus

Tuesdays, 10:30am to 1:30pm (earlier start on the first day of class only) January 30 - March 5, 2024 (Possible snow day make-up on March 12) Six sessions First day of class: Demo at 9:30am. Class ends at 1:30pm Personal Painting Projects other than Still Life also Welcomed (for Continuing or More Experienced Students) Still life provides a great tool to hone skills (drawing, composition, seeing the big shapes, assessing values, color mixing, paint handling) that apply to painting any subject. All levels welcome. Personal Painting Projects other than Still Life also welcomed (for continuing or more experienced students) Beginners will learn the fundamentals including seeing the big shapes, assessing and controlling values, laying in lights/darks (grisaille), color mixing, materials and form and will work from life. More advanced students will apply skills to increasingly challenging subject matter (metals, textures, water, flowers), and push their use of color, values, edges, paint texture, compositions, style, brushstrokes, and mood. Emphasis will be on teaching you how to be in charge of your paintings instead of studiously copying reality. Continuing or more experienced students interested in working in other representational (vs. abstract) genres: maritime, landscape, portrait, animal art, etc. are also welcome to this class — but they will need to supply their own copyright free source material — photos or field studies. All new students should work from life — painting the still lifes set up in class. Tuesdays 10:30 - 1:30 (Note that first class session is longer; from 9:30 - 11:00 am.)
