Description
Urban landscapes provide endless opportunities to capture changing light and reflections. Cities also provide different textures, from the stucco or brick of buildings that subtly reflect changing colors to the chrome on cars that bounce light and color around in unexpected ways. Varied light and weather conditions reveal the presence and power of nature to alter the landscape in an environment that often seems to ignore it, and the results at particular moments in time can be magical. This oil painting class will focus on the importance of composition and perspective when working in the urban landscapes, and explore the power of light, color, shadow, and mood. We will also explore different opportunities for varied brushstrokes and the use of other tools, such as palette knives, in our urban paintings. There is a lot of room for variations in style as long as certain elements are present, and although this class focuses on realism, there is room for approaches anywhere from photo realism to bordering on the abstract. In this class we will paint from photographs; you can bring your own or use one supplied by me. We will select images based on the strength of their composition, and consider elements such as light and color. We will focus on the accuracy of the drawing before beginning our paintings. All levels welcome.
