Master the fundamentals of classical realism drawing with illustrator Mariah Sotelino. Perfect for beginners! Learn the essential drawing skills to enhance work in any medium—watercolors, oils, ceramics, or digital art. As the saying goes, 'You can't paint yourself out of a drawing problem.' This class teaches you to create believable drawings with intentional line, accurate perspective, strong value contrast, and consistent lighting. ART INSTRUCTOR BIO: Mariah is a naturalist, educator, and illustrator with a master's in Illustration from Maryland Institute College of Art. A member of The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, and The Society of Illustrators, she's passionate about the intersection of science and art. With a nurturing personality and contagious smile, Mariah motivates young artists to find their own voice and build their artistic toolbox. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Block in shapes using the envelope method (still life) and grid method (photo reference) Check proportion, angles, and spatial relationships to achieve realistic lines Master 1-point, 2-point, and 3-point perspective to create 3D illusion on paper Apply the value scale to everyday objects for consistent, believable lighting Create aesthetically beautiful compositions using the golden ratio and rule of threes CLASS DATES: Thursdays, 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26, 3/5 (makeup date: 3/12 if needed) SUPPLY LIST: Drawing Paper: Canson Mi-Tientes, 10-sheet package (muted colors), 19" x 25" 3 sheets cloud white Canson Mi-Tientes, 19" x 25" (or multimedia/watercolor paper with good tooth) Final project: Canson Pastel Board, 16" x 20" (recommended) Drawing board (20" x 26" minimum) with four large clips For Still Lifes: Soft and hard vine charcoal sticks (recommended: Winsor & Newton) Sandpaper block (180 grade) for sharpening Kneadable eraser Chamois cloth Small and medium tortillons Workable fixative Viva signature cloth paper towels For Photo References: High-quality graphite pencils (Derwent, Faber Castell, or Staedtler): 6B, 4B, 2B, HB, 2H, 4H Plastic eraser (white or pink)
