ABOUT THE CLASS: Master the foundational secrets of classical realism drawing and learn how to translate 3D life onto 2D paper with clarity and depth. Designed especially for beginners, this course guides you step-by-step through drawing with vine charcoal and graphite in high-contrast lighting. Working with still lifes, hand models, and black-and-white photography references, you will master essential skills like measuring accurate values, establishing perspective, and creating precise line work. By training your eye to recognize light and shadow effectively, you will gain practical strategies to solve creative visual problems and build good drawing habits that last throughout your artistic journey. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Dmitri Modell is an illustrator and graphic designer who earned his degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. With a passion for classical realism and visual problem-solving, Dmitri has spent years creating commissioned works for clients, families, and individuals. His creative expertise spans traditional mediums like charcoal and graphite as well as digital illustration and animation using modern software. Known for his approachable teaching style, Dmitri is dedicated to helping new artists build foundational skills, refine their techniques, and confidently bring their ideas to life. SUPPLY LIST: Drawing Paper: Canson Mi-Tientes, 10-sheet package (muted colors), 19" x 25" 3 sheets cloud white Canson Mi-Tientes, 19" x 25" (or multimedia/watercolor paper with good tooth) Final project: Canson Pastel Board, 16" x 20" (recommended) Drawing board (20" x 26" minimum) with four large clips For Still Lifes: Soft and hard vine charcoal sticks (recommended: Winsor & Newton) Sandpaper block (180 grade) for sharpening Kneadable eraser Chamois cloth Small and medium tortillons Workable fixative Viva signature cloth paper towels For Photo References: High-quality graphite pencils (Derwent, Faber Castell, or Staedtler): 6B, 4B, 2B, HB, 2H, 4H Plastic eraser (white or pink)
