Description
Soft pastels are a beautiful and versatile medium suited to artists of all skill levels, styles, or favorite subject matter. Class Dates: September 23rd, 30th, October 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th. Class cancellation due to teacher illness or inclement weather will have a make up day on November 4th. Each week, we will explore different soft pastel techniques, materials, and/or subject matter. Some basic pastel experience is required as introductory materials and techniques won’t be covered. Lori will present a short lecture and demonstration each week. After the demonstration, students may choose to focus on that lesson or work on a subject or technique of their own choosing. Students are encouraged to provide their own photographic references for the given lesson, unless the subject is still life. For still life lessons, Lori will provide set-ups so that students may paint from life. Classroom critique and artistic exploration are encouraged. Supply List: 1. The Largest Set of Soft Pastels that you are willing to purchase! Small sets = more frustration. A set of half-sticks will provide you with more colors for less cost. I recommend a minimum of 90 colors in the following brands: Rembrandt, Mount Vision, Sennelier, Great American, Terry Ludwig, or Unison. The Rembrandt 120 Half-stick set is great for beginners and is around $150. EBay or Amazon can be even cheaper. The Unison and Sennelier 120 half-stick sets are great. If you purchase the softer Sennelier, supplement it with a small set of harder NuPastels. 2. SANDED Paper or boards 10 sheets of 9x12” UART Sanded Paper, either 400, 500, or 600 grit. 8x10” minimum or 12x18” pad to work larger. Pastel Premiere and ArtSpectrum papers are sufficient and available at Plaza Artist Materials. I prefer UArt paper. Avoid pads of “Pastel” paper (sold at Michael’s) which are only gridded paper. 3. Drawing Board with Clip (optional) Purchase at any craft store or online. You can tape your artwork to the board and then tote your painting home easily. School provided drawing boards available, but you will need to remove them before taking your artwork home. 4. Additional Supplies: Baby Wipes Paper Towels Masking Tape Latex/vinyl gloves (optional if you don’t want to get your hands dirty) Online Retailers www.dakotapastels.com www.proartpanels.com www.plazaart.com jerrysartarama.com dickblick.com
