Description

4-Day Camp (June 30th - July 3rd, 2025): Level I: Ages 8-12 years old. Students begin Day 1 in charcoal, learning how to use basic classical drawing approaches to depict their seashell still life on paper. During this phase we will focus on working big to small, starting with the most broad “masses” using lines and shapes; we will then break those shapes into clear separations of light and shadow on both the object, as well as its environment. After students have successfully seen and represented these separations, we will learn how to make the drawings look more dimensional by utilizing the value scale. We will transition to oil painting on Day 2, using the principles we learned in our Charcoal Drawing Stage to develop organized “block-ins”, or underpaintings, of our seashells on canvas. Days 3-4 will be spent learning how to bring our paintings to a “higher finish,” so students can end the week with a nicely developed seashell-themed Still Life painting. Annalisa Shanks is the daughter of Nelson and Leona Shanks, founders of Studio Incamminati, a classical realism art school in Philadelphia, PA.
